Can I prevent a fall?
Ron discusses the impact of falls.
I started falling at an early age. I fell off a garage roof as a young boy and I thought that would be the end of it. But actually now, in the last several years, I’ve had two serious falls. The first- I was painting my garage eves in the back yard. The subject of looking forward, throwing my head back to reach up and smooth out the paint, caused a short black out and dizzy spell and I grabbed on to the step ladder, I was standing on the ground and the ladder and I and three quarters of a gallon of paint all went down to the ground. Fortunately, I didn’t injure myself, but I sure had a messy back yard. I also slipped on stairs, had a little bit of ice on there. I was trying to clear off a little snow. And my one leg went out from underneath me, fell down and broke my ankle. And again I didn’t have to have surgery but I had a cast and a whole- about a month and half with working with that. And that was hard to do. So falling is very prevalent, it’s always there. You don’t expect it. But, you do one careless little thing and it can happen to you, so you have to be careful and think about it all the time.
